From my tour in 2002, through my time alongside then-COL Zwack in 2008/2009, and a later 2010/2011 tour, I gave more than 800-days toward a better, freer, more democratic opportunity for all the sons and daughters of Afghanistan. Though it cost me a broken marriage and a lost family, my sacrifices pale in comparison to that of my brothers and sisters who gave their full and final measure under an Afghan sun. (ret) Peter Zwack for roughly a third of a century - from before the time he entered the U.S. Army, through the years of his storied and dedicated service to our country. Back in the day, I eagerly read each issue of the Kurier - be it Kosovo or Kabul - and Peter and I had many fine discussions about both of these conflict prone parts of the planet, but most especially Afghanistan. Peter's insights - then and now - have proven to be insightful, enlightening, and often prescient. What sets his vision about Afghanistan apart from so many trite, ill informed media commentators is not only his deep personal knowledge of Afghanistan, but the 'bigger picture' of its history, and the larger saga of the region. Here, in this wonderful book, we see the breadth and depth of Gen. Zwack's perspective - but presented in a way that is vivid, engaging, and deeply personal. Read this book, and you will come away with a perspective on the Afghan conflict and people that is simply not available anywhere else. Five stars - very much deserved!!! His insights are mixed with real humanity that makes what he details about the country and the people particularly intriguing and enlightening. Zwack, a professional soldier, mixes his expertise with a profound understand of the history of the region that truly informs the reader about the complexities of the region. I felt truly informed. Not JUST a general that’s giving a first hand, boots on the ground, perspective on a country the US was at war with for 20 years, he’s a very sound human being with a well rounded perspective.
